Adelord (Ed) Laverdiere

Adelord (Ed) Laverdiere was born to Joseph Maximillian (Max) and Jane Leonie Laverdiere (Couckuyt) on June 15, 1933 on their farm south of Wolseley, SK. Ed passed away on October 18, 2017, at the age of 84, at Clover House palliative care in Swift Current, SK.
Ed was the baby of the family. He had 4 older siblings: Arthur (Art), Madeline, Maxine (who died in infancy), and Leonie. Ed was raised by his father and older siblings from the age of three. He remembered spending many summers at his Aunt Rose Perra's home and became treasured friends with his cousin Dominique. As a child, he rode his horse "Birdie" to school. He attended Abbottsford and Southgate schools. As a teenager and young man, he and his dad would farm together and break horses on Maximillian's farm south of Wolseley. Ed married Edna Schick of Wolseley in June, 1957. They settled in Wolseley and Ed was employed as a carpenter for the Souchotte family. In 1959, Ed started work with the N.M.Paterson Grain Elevator Construction Company where he worked from 1959-1961. During this time he also cared for, trained, and raced harness racing horses for Doctor Isman and William (Bill) Conn of Wolseley. Son-Kenneth and daughter-Bonnie were born to them while in Wolseley.
Ed and Edna moved to Minto, Manitoba in Oct. 1961 and took over the Imperial Oil (Esso) Agency and Dealership. He was affectionately known as "Esso Ed" to his friends and customers. Another daughter-Lynn and son-Kirby were born to them while they lived in Minto. During this time winters were spent at the rink as Ed and Edna were very involved with the senior hockey team the "Minto Mustangs". They were equipment managers for the team for many years. The summers were spent doing the harness racing circuit in Manitoba. Ed rarely missed a weekend of harness racing and a chance to connect with old friends on the circuit! On April 30, 1975, Ed resigned from Imperial Oil (Esso) Agency and was again employed by N.M.Paterson Grain Elevator Construction Company. He was now a foreman and the work took him to Orkney, SK to help build a new Paterson elevator there in the fall of 1975. Ed and Edna went their separate ways in 1976.
Ed met Valerie Proust of Val Marie while living in Orkney. They eventually settled in Ponteix in 1979 and were married in July, 1980. Born to them were 3 sons, Edward, Buddy and Rene. Ed continued to work for N.M.Paterson Grain Elevator Construction Company until he retired in 1990. After retirement, he kept busy working for farmers around Ponteix and did odd jobs as a handyman. He also had a small upholstery business for a time. He enjoyed his yard, large garden, woodworking, camping and fishing. He also raised chickens and sold eggs for many years. If you couldn't find Ed at home, he could be found at the cabin at Governor. Ed loved his family. He was always the biggest supporter of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, no matter what they choose to do. He was ever so proud of their accomplishments in life and would brag about them if given a chance. Ed was predeceased by his parents Maximillian and Jane Laverdiere, his siblings and their spouses: Art and Cecile Laverdiere, Madeline and Leo Martel and Leonie Hannan. He was also predeceased by his oldest son Kenneth and a grandson Elijah. He was also predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law Alcide and Leona Proust.
