Ruth Heron

HERON (Heard) - Ruth Mary passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at the age of 99 years and 8 days, at the Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri, SK. Ruth was born on the family homestead at Shackleton, SK to Grant and Henrietta Heard on August 15, 1919. She attended school in Shackleton from 1926 to 1938. In 1940, she went to Regina to train as a nurse at the Regina General Hospital graduating as an RN in 1943, and worked in Toronto, Melfort and Cabri. On February 28, 1946 she and Fulton Heron were married at the Heard family homestead near Shackleton, where their son Robert (Marlis) currently live. They took up farming and lived on the farm which belonged to Fulton's grandparents, actively farming until 1982, and moving into Cabri in 1992. Ruth and Fulton enjoyed 62 years of marriage until Fulton passed away in June 2008. Ruth lived in her home in Cabri until 2014 when she moved into the Prairie Health Care Centre and had been a resident there since that time. Ruth was actively involved with the Girl Guides for many years eventually becoming a District Commissioner. She was also known as the "camp nurse" for many summer girl guide camps at the Widdifield Ranch. Ruth was an active member of the Shackleton United Church Women's group for many years. Ruth and Fulton were very active with the Cabri Museum Board and spent a lot time helping with displays and histories for many years. They were involved together with archaeology and were often seen hunting arrowheads at the river and many other locations and were influential in helping to form the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society. They were instrumental in discovering the archaeology site to be named the "Heron Eden Site" south of Prelate. In May 2008, Ruth and Fulton received pins and certificates in recognition of 46 years of membership with The Saskatchewan Archaeological Society. Ruth, along with her sisters had a keen interest in genealogy and put together family histories for the Harris, Heard, Jacklin and Heron families. Ruth is survived by her five children, son Robert (Marlis) of Cabri, granddaughter Andrea (Brendon) Mix, great grandchildren Sydney and Barrett of Olds, AB; grandson Erik (Janelle) of Saskatoon; son Ron of Shackleton; daughter Glynda (Ewen) Newton, grandsons Matthew and Michael (Eliot) of Ottawa, ON; daughter Jan (Bob) Anweiler of Saskatoon, grandson Chris (Denise), step-great grandchildren Jordyn, Matthew and Tanner of Warman, and Kerilyn (Jason), step-great grandchildren Jessica and Austin of Yorkton; son Murray (Teresa) of Cabri, granddaughters Denille (Chris) Yungmann and Dayna (Tim) of Saskatoon. Ruth is survived by one sister, Wilma Holmes of Carrot River, SK; sisters-in-law Ruby Wengel, Eloise Miller and Edith Thomas and brothers-in-law Clayton (Isabelle) Heron and Daryl (Carole) Heron, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Henrietta and Grant Heard, husband Fulton, infant brother John, sister Glado (Mike) Samuels, brother-in-law Ralph Holmes, sister-in-law Freida (Chris) Hesketh, brothers-in-law Max Miller, Ernest Wengel, George Thomas, sister-in-law Muriel (Bud) Allen, brother-in-law Glenn (Lorraine) Heron and step-great granddaughter Cassidy Gosling. At her request a graveside service for immediate family will be held on September 15th at the Shackleton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cabri Hospital Auxiliary, Box 104, Cabri, SK or to the Cabri Museum (please make cheques payable to Town of Cabri, Box 200, Cabri, SK with a notation "Cabri Museum Donation").
