Evelyn Henderson

HENDERSON: Evelyn Gladys passed away peacefully at the Cypress Regional Hospital on November 2, 2017 at the age of 79. She was born on July 14, 1938 in Kindersley, SK and was the oldest of eight children of Art and Gladys Ward of Flaxcombe, SK. Evelyn grew up on the family farm north of Flaxcombe and took her schooling in a one room school, traveling two and a half miles by horse and cart with her brother and two sisters. Evelyn left the farm life behind to live in Regina, SK in the late 50's. In 1960, she met Jack Henderson and they were married in February 1962. They had four children, Sheila, David, Beverley and Karen, who where all born in Regina. In December 1968 in 40 below weather, the family moved to Swift Current. Her life was busy, busy, busy. She was a homemaker, she babysat many kids seven days a week, a Brownie Leader for many years and worked her way up to Madame Commissioner, home cooked meals and desserts, made angel food cakes for everybody's birthday, went shopping with four kids in tow and she kept everyone and everything in line. She worked tirelessly on family history, not only for herself, but for others too. In 1981 she joined the Swift Current Genealogical Society. She put her heart and soul into tracing family history. In 1980 she got out into the real world and started working at the Travelodge. In 1989, she picked up a second job at A & W, where she was known as Gramma to all the staff. After 18 years at the Travelodge, she went over to the Super 8 for a few years. Not many realize that she worked two full time jobs for 18 years. Evelyn loved bingo nights. She usually was working most nights, but sometimes she got a day off to play too. She also loved traveling. Starting from weekend Brownie camps, trips to Hawaii, Scotland, twice to Tazmania, Australia to meet her lifelong pen pal and various points in Western Canada and the western States. Evelyn wasn't the type to sit and do nothing. She was always on the go and had a positive attitude, even in the last 15 months of her life, she didn't let her two broken hips, broken nose and broken hand slow her down. She was an inspiration to many. Evelyn is survived by her daughters Sheila (Rob) Stienley, Beverley Henderson both of Swift Current, Karen Henderson (Kelvin Letkeman) of Regina, and foster daughter Jo (John) Bain of Edmonton, AB; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sisters Eva (Archie) Szabo of Medicine Hat, AB, Marjorie (Ron) Stevens of Grandora, SK and Sharon (Dale) Graham of Red Deer, AB; brothers Richard (Brenda) Ward of Halifax, NS and Robert (Kim) Ward of Smiley, SK; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her son David (2016); her parents Art (1991) and Gladys (1982); brothers Roy Ward (2015) and Raymond Ward (2009); and nephews Doug Stevens (1982), Donny Stevens (1976) and Gary Stevens (1982). The memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday November 13, 2017 from First United Church with Reverend Annette Taylor officiating. The pianist was Sharon Veer, urn bearer Karen Henderson, ushers were Jason Stienley and Cody Henderson, and honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in Evelyn's life.
